Chicago Cubs

No, I’m not distracted by trade rumors or anything – I just typed Cubs 2, Blue Jays 1 …

Jon Lester did what the Cubs really, really needed him to today, going six strong, and only heading out after giving up a homer in the 7th inning. He was getting whiffs, he didn’t walk anyone, and put the Cubs in a position to be able to use their bullpen well to keep the Diamondbacks in check.

Offensively, it was yet another non-banner-day for the Cubs, though it’s fair to point out that injuries sapped them of their optimal lineup against a lefty who is tough on lefties.

Still, the Cubs scored just enough to win, thanks to an RBI knock by Ben Zobrist early, and Javy Baez hobbling his way to an infield single (and reaching second on an errant throw) late. That run was actually thereafter scored by pinch-runner Tyler Chatwood, so that’s kinda like a position player pitching, right?

The story of the day, though, clearly goes to Jon Lester …
