One Stellar Highlight from the Game: Jason Heyward’s Absurd Throw (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

As you already knew, there just weren’t a lot of things to enjoy about yesterday’s loss to the Cardinals. It made for two straight such losses, and the Cubs’ lead in the NL Central shrank to just a half-game. No sugar to do any coating there.

But! Because of that ugliness, I think a truly ridiculous highlight got buried in the dung, and I wanted to make sure Jason Heyward got all appropriate love for a play he had no business making:

To be sure, Jose Martinez didn’t get a great jump on that ball, but with two outs and the ball hit so far away from Heyward, that should have as easy as first-to-third gets. And heck, as you can see in the replay, Martinez was already WELL PAST second base by the time Heyward even threw the ball from relatively deep and up the line! There’s just no way you should ever be able to throw a guy out at third base from right field on that particular play.

You never know how a play like that can impact a game. Sure, in yesterday’s situation, it didn’t matter. But that’s the kind of stolen out that maybe keeps a couple runs off the board, and Heyward does it all the time. His advanced defensive metrics are down again this year (I can only assume because he really did have a couple very tough weeks early in the year where he was biffing a lot), but the guy is still as elite as ever out there in right. Couple it with his now slightly-above-average bat, and the Cubs are in 2018 basically getting the guy they though they were getting two years ago.
