The Cubs managed a magical run when Willson Contreras pulled off a fantastic swim move slide at the plate. Everything went very poorly in the game after that.
But even that moment was questionable, as Mike Montgomery was batting with runners at first and third and one out in a scoreless game. He’d given up a lot of hits, and – as evinced by the fact that he was pulled after one walk just an inning later – he was already on a short leash. Why was he batting at that moment, with two runners on, in a tie game? Obviously you can always answer that with wanting to have the starters go deeper into games, but, again, Montgomery pulled right after that anyway. The Cubs missed a golden opportunity to score multiple runs.
Maybe it wouldn’t have matter, given how ugly the rest of the game was. Shrug. Sigh. All that.
