I can’t believe that just happened. I am stunned. So stunned. So happy and stunned.
Down 3-0 coming into the bottom of the 9th, the Cubs managed to load the bases – thanks to some help from the Nationals – and David Bote came to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs. Down 1-2 in the count, he freaking uncorked on one to dead center, and he knew it right off the bat.
A two-out, pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?
We will have so much more to enjoy from that one.
In the meantime, Cole Hamels was incredible, virtually matching Max Scherzer. A walk and a single. That’s all Hamels gave up tonight over seven innings. And if those two things hadn’t come from back-to-back batters, the Nationals probably wouldn’t have scored a run off of Hamels either.
The bullpen didn’t do so well after that, but thanks to Bote, it didn’t matter.
