By the time the bottom of the 8th inning rolled around today, the Cubs new second baseman, Daniel Murphy, had recorded five hits in just 2.5 games for his new team, which was a fantastic start. The only problem was those were all singles.
Well, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Murphy hit his first extra-base hit as a Cub and it was a big one: a (edit: grumble …”then”) go-ahead solo home run.
Check it out:
Probably the first home run Daniel Murphy has ever hit at Wrigley Field.

That was Murphy’s seventh homer of the season and capped off his third consecutive multi-hit game since joining the Cubs. His season slash line now sits at .309/.347/.456. Pedro Strop gave up a home run immediately in the 9th, so this game isn’t over yet, but Murphy’s career as a Cub has gotten off to a rocket start.
Some post-homer fun and curtain call:
Rizzo said last night adding Murphy to the lineup will “pay huge dividends” The #Cubs leadoff hitter just gave them a 2-1 lead in the 8th. Catch the final on @NBCSChicago pic.twitter.com/u4nAa0gGh4
