Cubs Minor League Daily: South Bend Put Up a FIVE-Run 9th Inning to Come Back and Walk Off

Chicago Cubs

The South Bend Cubs entered the ninth inning with a one run lead, and then they gave up five runs. But the game was in South Bend. That meant the Cubs got the last at bats, and in their final half inning they scored five times to pull off a wild win.

The highlight video below does a better job of showing the rally than anything I could write. And it also includes some nice footage of Brailyn Marquez, so you should definitely just watch it already.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Omaha 7, Iowa 2
The Duensing rehab appearance did not go well.

  • Kyle Ryan: 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 4 K

The Emeralds jumped to a first inning lead and just kept adding on from there.

If they win today, the Cubs will finish with the best overall record in the Arizona Rookie League.

  • Henderson Perez: 2 for 6
  • Fidel Mejia: 2 for 6
  • Carlos Pacheco: 2 for 4, 2 B, 2 BB

Other Notes

  • It was not a good day for Iowa’s bullpen. Brian Duensing needed 18 pitches to get two outs… and give up three runs. Allen Webster got an out… and gave up a homer. Duane Underwood struck out two in his inning… and gave up a run on three hits. Fortunately it was just one game, as all three could otherwise be in position to help in September.
  • Two earned runs in five innings is a pretty good full season league debut for Brailyn Marquez. He’ll likely head back to South Bend to open next season, and his progress promises to be one of the major stories we follow in 2019.
  • Salem-Keizer lost, so Eugene is all alone as the second half qualifier for the Northwest League playoffs. At least for now.
  • The last day of the Arizona Rookie League is today. AZL Cubs 1 will then head to the very brief Rookie League playoffs. By this time next week, it will probably all be over.
