Yesterday, we were celebrating not only the fact that the Cubs had won again, but also that the Cardinals and Brewers got blown out.
Today, not so much on that second part.
Although the Cubs did win again yesterday, pulling off the four-game sweep of the Reds, each of the Cardinals and Brewers also won. The Cardinals jumped all over the Rockies, and the Brewers blew up Chris Archer and the Pirates. Thus, the NL Central standings stay as they were, with the Cubs 4.0 games (five in the loss column) on the Cardinals, and 4.5 games (six in the loss column) on the Brewers.
With their loss, the Rockies fell out of the Wild Card tie, leaving the Cardinals and Brewers alone in those two spots. The Phillies, who beat the Blue Jays, are 2.0 games back of the Brewers (and 3.0 games back of the Braves in the East). The Dodgers, who beat the Padres, are 2.5 games back (and also 2.5 games back of the Diamondbacks in the West). As you can see, the divisional races and Wild Card races all remain fairly clustered, with the Cubs’ lead in the Central the biggest of the group.
The Cubs now open up a three-game set in Chicago against the Mets, while the Cardinals host the Pirates and the Brewers travel to Cincinnati.
