Some contender out there – no, I really don’t think it’ll be the Cubs this time! – is going to have a chance to pick up an MVP-caliber bat for nothing.
Latest notes: Donaldson looking like a goner; waiting – still – on Vlad Jr. and Eloy; thoughts on "the opener" as a salary suppressor; #Mets' Wright; #Nationals' motivations; #Mariners' chances. https://t.co/GPavYgbuD5 $

Among Ken Rosenthal’s latest set of always interesting notes, he mentions that the Blue Jays have placed Josh Donaldson on revocable trade waivers with the specific hope that he’s claimed (he’s owed $4 million the rest of the way). If not, they apparently fully intend to trade him before Friday’s waiver trade deadline (i.e., the date by which you must have a guy in your org if you want him to be eligible for the postseason), as they don’t want to have to decide whether to make him a qualifying offer after the season (because he might take it).
Donaldson, 32, has been an absolute behemoth at the plate going on a half-decade now, but he struggled out of the gate this season, and then went on the shelf with a calf injury that’s had him out for nearly three months. He’s still in the rehab process, but will soon be able to return to the big leagues.
If it’s not with the Blue Jays, some contender out there will get to roll the dice on Donaldson being healthy and back to form at the plate. If that happens, it’ll be not unlike the Cubs adding a guy like Daniel Murphy. It could make a huge difference.
The Cubs don’t make sense here, and neither do the Brewers. But you could make an argument for the Cardinals if they don’t want to rely solely on Jedd Gyorko at third base. Elsewhere in the NL, the Rockies and Braves could definitely use him, the Diamondbacks are probably happy with Eduardo Escobar, and you could probably make an argument for the Phillies.
A reminder: Donaldson would have to get past all of the AL teams before the NL teams would get a crack. Let’s just go ahead and hope one of those AL teams claims him.
