Last night, the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets couldn’t get things done in regulation, so they headed into extras as heavy rains approached Chicago. Unfortunately, that game was unable to be completed, so they’ll finish it today starting at noon. With that in mind, I thought it was worth resetting a bit to remember what’s already happened.
Cole Hamels started this game and threw 5.0 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks, dropping his ERA down to 0.69 during his time with the Cubs. He was eventually relieved by Brandon Kintzler, who got just one out before being removed for Jorge De La Rosa. De La Rosa finished Kintzler’s inning of work and threw another on his own, before, himself, being followed by Carl Edwards (1.0 IP) and Pedro Strop (1.0 IP). Steve Cishek took over in the 10th, but threw just two pitches, so he’ll lead off today’s game when it gets underway.
In other words, when looking at the Cubs bullpen, this is all that’s left for the remainder of this makeup:
- Jesse Chavez
- Steve Cishek
Jorge De la RosaCarl Edwards Jr.Brandon Kintzler- Randy Rosario
Pedro Strop- Justin Wilson
Having Jesse Chavez available is pretty helpful, considering how many innings he can typically go. But it’s important to remember that the Cubs not only have another game today, but they have a busy travel schedule starting tonight, as well as 23 games in 23 days. This was all less than ideal.
But the relievers aren’t the only players who are out. You can check out the Cubs lineup for the substitutions, but know that Daniel Murphy cannot appear in this game, even though David Bote is due up, followed by the top of the order, when the Cubs resume batting. And Tommy La Stella has also already pinched hit. So when looking at the Cubs bench, this is all that’s left for the remainder of the game:
- Willson Contreras
- Ian Happ
Ben ZobristTommy La Stella
That’s it. And with Contreras likely set to start the regularly scheduled game later today, you can pretty much bet the Cubs would really really really rather not use him.
The Mets, meanwhile, have used just Jacob deGrom and Seth Lugo to cover their 9.0 innings and have not substituted out a batter yet. They’ll begin the game with Michael Conforto batting and two balls and are clearly in far better shape than the Cubs for this one.
