The Cubs really needed today’s resumed game against the Mets to end fairly quickly. They’ve got another game to play today yet, and then they have to fly to Atlanta for one game before flying again tomorrow night to Philadelphia.
So it was doubly satisfying to see things wrap up today not only in a Cubs win, but after just two innings.
After some good/fortunate defense helped the Cubs keep the Mets scoreless in the 10th and the 11th, Javy Baez led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk after starting his count down 0-2. That’s gotta be pretty rare. A sac bunt, a throwing error, and an intentional walk later, the bases were loaded with nobody out. Although Albert Almora struck out looking, Ben Zobrist came through, as he does:

It was nice to see his teammates take it easy on the celebration with the old man. Gotta protect those valuable, clutch joints!
Speaking of which, I can’t think of a more clutch hit ever by Ben Zobrist.
