If you were looking for a symbolic end to the minor league season, you definitely got it.
Highlighting the fact that the rebuilding farm system will feature much more pitching than the previous farm system, Cubs pitching produced shutouts in Tennessee and South Bend, and allowed just two runs in Myrtle Beach. Eugene definitely missed the great pitching boat, but one of their big bats reminded us to not forget about the next cadre of potential impact talent as Nelson Velazquez homered twice.
On the whole, it was a positive final note to a minor league season that was, on the whole, disappointing. But as we’ve said before, the tide has turned. It will take awhile before the results of that turn are really felt and the farm system is no longer ranked among the worst in baseball, but it has turned.
Of course, the end of the regular season isn’t the end of the Daily. The Eugene Emeralds are headed for an unlikely date with the Hillsboro Hops in the playoffs starting on Wednesday. As long as the Emeralds are alive, we’ll keep the Daily running.
