Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Nationals (12:35 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Chicago Cubs

I know, coming into the weekend, that all we really wanted to see was the Cubs head back home to face the Brewers with a big enough lead in the NL Central, so that even a series sweep wouldn’t land them in second place by Wednesday. Unfortunately, unless the Cubs win and Brewers lose today that’s not going to happen.

… But also, it can happen. And let’s be perfectly clear, this wasn’t ever entirely in the Cubs hands. If they manage to win two games out of four against the Nationals in Washington when both Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer pitched in the series, that’s a huge win – even without considering the rainouts, double-headers, lack of off days, etc. Winning two out of four on the road is very tough, but it’s tougher when there’s so much conspiring against you.

So while I’ll be bummed if the Cubs don’t get that sweep-proof lead by the end of the day today, if they win and split this series, it’ll be hard for me to blame them. And ultimately, even if they don’t, they can also try beating the Brewers (gasp!). Having a sweep-proof lead is great for peace of mind, but it’s not, like, necessary. The Cubs can also just win, so don’t despair. Not yet.

And who knows? Maybe Mike Montgomery will deliver an A+ start today and we’ll watch the Cubs head into the week with a magic of 17 or less.
