Although it’s not immediately clear how serious either injury is, even losing two key players for half a game against the Reds (a game the Brewers currently trail) is notable.
Schoop moves from shortstop to second base to replace Travis Shaw, who exits with a bruised right knee. He was hit by a pitch in the second inning.

Lorenzo Cain also out of game for #Brewers in fourth. Gotta be something bugging him, too. Came out of game early last night also but not this early.

The optimistic take here for Brewers fans is that Shaw initially stayed in the game, so perhaps he’s not seriously injured, and just was feeling the discomfort a bit too much to stay in. And for Cain, maybe it’s just a sore this or that, and it won’t be a long-term issue.
But obviously, if either injury costs these guys playing time – with only a couple weeks left in the season – that is major news. I’ll update if and when more is out there.
UPDATE: This can be a tricky issue for hitters:
It’s a tight right ribcage for Lorenzo Cain, who tweaked it on a swing several days ago. Craig Counsell didn’t like the look of the swings tonight. Unclear whether Cain will be able to play Wednesday.
