LOL at Anyone Thinking They Can Take a Free Base on Willson Contreras (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

Usually, when a team is up a handful of runs in the 9th inning, they become less persnickety about individual baserunners. Get the guy(s) at the plate, and the baserunner doesn’t matter.

That lack of care often extends the “defensive indifference” non-steal of second base, where a runner is frequently permitted to take second base without a throw because, hey, there are a couple outs and you’re not gonna mess around with it when you’re up four runs.

But Willson Contreras does not know the meaning of “defensive indifference.” He is not indifferent about *ANYTHING* on the baseball diamond. So when Paul Goldschmidt did the customary thing with two outs in the 9th inning, loping off for second base to at least remove a force out on the bases, Willson Contreras was like, “Oh hell no. Not on my watch”:

Ballgame. Cubs win.

I would say it’s a very, very embarrassing way to end a game that you trail by four, but, again, Goldschmidt was just doing what every runner does in that situation. That’s a free base, right?

Now you all know: there are no free bases when Willy has the ball in his hands.

Also, Justin Wilson looks thoroughly terrified to receive Contreras’s celebration after that final out:
