Addison Russell Releases Statement of Denial

Chicago Cubs

Tonight, via the Players Association, Addison Russell released a brief statement addressing the allegations by his ex-wife Melisa Reidy that he was physically and emotionally abusive during their relationship. Russell maintains his innocence.

In the current climate, and in anticipation of some reactions, I think it is appropriate to say two things: (1) I don’t see a realistic explanation for a woman – at great risk and cost to herself – putting out a detailed statement like the one Melisa did unless it was a true reflection of her experience; (2) I think it is fair to share Russell’s statement and denial, and offer him the opportunity to be heard in a more specific way. Based on his statement, however, it seems he does not want to do that publicly, and the matter will be in the hands – for now – of MLB.

The process will play out again, this time with more information than was available previously. Until MLB makes a determination, Russell will be on administrative leave from the Cubs.
