You know things are bad when the Cubs can’t even muster their customary solo homer against the Pirates.
With no extra-base hits outside of one Anthony Rizzo double, and no hits with runners in scoring position, the Cubs were blanked by the Pirates, who themselves had no trouble putting up runs on Mike Montgomery. He lasted just four innings, and the bullpen went seven arms from there – I’d joke about tryouts for the playoffs, but I don’t think anyone wants to talk about the playoffs right now.
