Just before the game last night, word broke that Kris Bryant was available off the bench and could start as soon as today. Well, he didn’t pinch hit yesterday, but he’s back in the lineup against the Cardinals this afternoon! Woo!
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Daniel Murphy, 2B
- Ben Zobrist, RF
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Javy Baez, SS
- Jason Heyward, CF
- Kris Bryant, LF
- Willson Contreras, C
- Kyle Hendricks, P
- David Bote, 3B
The Cubs are getting Adam Wainright this afternoon and they’ll do it with Kris Bryant in the lineup, batting sixth and playing left field. What’s strange, however, is that with Bryant in left, Kyle Schwarber has hit the bench with David Bote effectively taking his place, via third base.
Now, Wainwright does have reverse splits this season, but he’s a traditional split righty for his career. So what gives? Well, it might be that Schwarber has gone 0-9 with 3 walks against Wainwright for his career, and Joe Maddon has simply decided not to play the “he’s due” game today. With that in mind, I think it’s a pretty good decision, regardless of the splits.
Elsewhere, Willson Contreras is back behind the plate tonight, and I would like nothing more than to see him end the season with a really strong weekend. He’ll face some tough starters tomorrow and Sunday, too, so I would get in some hacks on Wainwright today if you’re looking to do lasting damage to the Cardinals.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (1:20 CT).
