Red Sox Take Game One, Rehman Moves On, and Other Bullets

The Little Boy wants to learn how to play chess, which I’m very excited to teach him. But I don’t actually know the best way to teach someone how to play chess other than being like, yeah, this piece does this, this piece does this, now just remember that. I should probably do some reading if I actually want to teach him in a way that it’ll stick and that he’ll enjoy.

  • The Boston Red Sox took Game One of the World Series last night 8-4 over the Los Angeles Dodgers. It had been a tight, back-and-forth affair until the 7th inning, when Eduardo Nunez parked a pinch-hit, three-run shot atop the Green Monster to give the Red Sox a four-run lead.

  • Now former Cubs assistant GM Shiraz Rehman spoke about his decision to make what appeared to be a lateral move from the Cubs to the Rangers. Turns out, even though his title will be the same, he’s a little “higher up” with the Rangers, because there aren’t two layers (Jed Hoyer and then Theo Epstein) ahead of him. Instead, he’ll report directly to top Rangers baseball man Jon Daniels. As he explained it, “I had seven wonderful seasons in Chicago and have [a World Series] ring that I’m very proud of, but I think I was ready for a new challenge. In some respects, [Chicago] was a bit of a top-heavy shop. With the Rangers, there is an opportunity to have the scope be a little larger.” In other words, it seems like Rehman is suggesting the guys at the top with the Cubs (Hoyer, Epstein, and probably Jason McLeod) control the decision-making. Understandable for the Cubs, but also understandable why Rehman might want to find an opportunity for more autonomy.
  • Anthony Rizzo is The Captain:
  • I know that ESPN has more of a vested interest in the NFL, and I also know that they are not everyone’s favorite sports stop anymore, but given that they are still a self-interested sports site with a massive audience, I see this as something of a useful and troubling bellwether:
  • I’m sure the way the camera is tracking this pitch has a little to do with how it looks, but still … this is ridiculous:
