Beautiful Cubs Defensive Highlights, Blue Jays Hire a Manager, Brewers Fans Get Mad, and Other Bullets

Anybody had a good ghost experience out there? Something that you can’t explain and that you wind up attributing to the supernatural? ‘Tis the season …

  • The Cubs netted three Gold Glove nominees yesterday, and the Cubs in response put out a highlight video. I am so starved for baseball that I am just watching this on a loop:
  • Another Brandon Hyde interview spot, another managerial gig filled by someone else:
  • Montoyo, like Hyde, was a bench coach (Rays) who’d also worked for years in the minor leagues as a manager. Unless Hyde lands the Rangers’ job – certainly possible, given how closely the two organizations seem to think about things – the Cubs’ bench coach figures to return in 2019.
  • I love seeing how, after a few down games (his first games in months, coming against the best competition he’s ever seen), Nico Hoerner has really turned it on:

  • And how about pitching prospect Erick Leal, who has continued his 2018 breakout? The Cubs very well may have to put him on the 40-man roster at this point, because he’s eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. It’s hard to see him sticking on a big league roster all season, and he’s not necessarily the kind of fireballer who can make the leap from High-A to the middle of a Major League bullpen. But if a rebuilding club believes in his talent, they may yet take a crack at plucking him and figuring out how to keep him later.
  • Tough rostering call, though the Cubs will have the benefit this year of not having a ton of prospects who definitely, clearly must be added. Looking over the list of eligible prospects at TCR, the only guy who jumps out as a MUST add is Justin Steele. Otherwise, there are some guys you might think about for a moment if the scouting community is hot on them, but really, I don’t see a lot of other guys who are significant risks to be selected. If the Cubs want to add Leal, there will be plenty of space to do so.
  • Brewers fans on Twitter got very angry about our factual look at the Brewers’ payroll situation heading into the offseason, which, hey, I get it – no one wants to hear a rival’s fan base talk about what you might not be able to do in free agency. They don’t seem to understand that we look at that stuff because it’s relevant to the Cubs heading into 2019. It’s important for Cubs fans to have context for the state of one of their key divisional rivals heading into what could be a transformative offseason (and note, it’s not like we painted an overly rosy picture of the Cubs’ payroll situation just a day earlier). So that’s why we do it, and the literal dozens and dozens of shots Michael and I took from that group yesterday mostly made me chuckle. Even Cardinals fans don’t descend on outsiders like that. I don’t want to label an entire fanbase desperately insecure because of a hundred or so knuckleheads, but it didn’t really do much to dispel the Little Brother perception they’ve fostered (including the Brewers’ own social media team) over the past two years.
  • I do want to point out one reply I got, and my message for it, because this is something I think we can all benefit from. We’ve gotta cut this line out of our verbiage:
  • Random, but wonderful:
  • Humidifiers, robot vacuums, and much more are your Deals of the Day today.
  • And in the Bears world:
