Woo! The Chicago Cubs have two games today – they’ll split their squad in half – and that’s a whole lot of baseball, folks!
Half the team (and more of the “regulars”) will be hosting the San Diego Padres at Sloan Park, while the other half will head over to Camelback Ranch to take on the Dodgers. Neither of the games will be televised, but you will at least be able to catch the audio.
Against the Padres, Jon Lester will get his first start of the Spring and he’ll pitch in front of a defense containing Jason Heyward (leading off again, but still only because you want your normies to get as many ABs as possible before being removed after a few innings), Daniel Descalso, Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, and Willson Contreras.
At Camelback Ranch, Christian Bergman will start the game, in front of Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber, and a collection of big league long-shots and fringey prospects.
Notably, in the game against the Dodgers, you’ll find Ian Happ out in center field. Happ’s positional assignments this Spring will be tracked very closely (by me), because he is expected to move into the infield picture a bit more this year. He already got one start at second base this Spring and now he’s moving back into center field.
If he’s really able to move between those two up-the-middle spots and remain effective defensively, Happ is going to earn himself a lot more playing time this year.
