The Cubs are hosting the Giants at Sloan Park this afternoon, and former Cub Jeff Samardzija will be on the mound for the other guys. He’ll face a lineup with a mix of regulars and roster hopefuls, as well as a few notable defensive choices.
Specifically, David Bote is getting another chance to prove that he can/will be Javy Baez’s backup shortstop for at least the first month of the season (until Addison Russell returns from his suspension for domestic violence), while Ian Happ gets yet another start at second base. It’s difficult to say how often we’ll see Happ at second this year, but he wants it and Joe Maddon has been accommodating all Spring.
Starting opposite Samardzija today is Kyle Hendricks. The Cubs righty will make what’s likely his second-to-last start of the Spring, depending on how the rotation shakes out, and will bat eighth in the lineup.
This game won’t be televised, but you can catch the audio on MLB.com.
