The story of the day is, of course, the Cubs’ pitching, which was quite a weird showing. But it worked!
Yu Darvish was, as he is far too frequently, simply too wild, unable to consistently command his fastball enough to get the most out of his breaking pitches. To his credit, despite his own repeated self-made trouble, Darvish did make some very nice pitches when he absolutely had to. But, when you’re walking everyone (and striking out others on 3-2 counts), you won’t last very long. More on Darvish later.
Good to have Mike Montgomery back, eh? As a piggybacker for Darvish, Montgomery was more or less perfect, covering the last five innings of the game, and saving the bullpen for this weekend’s Brewers series. That was a stud move, and it was a reminder that Montgomery seems to be at his best with the Cubs when he’s used like a “starter.” Wonder if there will be something there …
That’s three out of four in the series for the Cubs, who just don’t lose series anymore!
