After a relatively lightning quick recovery from a fractured hamate bone (and subsequent surgery), back-up catcher Victor Caratini is back with the big club. He missed only a little over a month.
He was looking fantastic at the plate in limited duty before his injury (17 plate appearances, so we should probably chill a bit), and probably provides the Cubs a considerable offensive upgrade over Taylor Davis as the back-up.
But how about defensively, and as a game-caller/receiver? Well, Davis acquitted himself quite well there, catching Yu Darvish. Caratini got plaudits on that side of things in the Spring, though, and as he was a converted catcher in the minors (like Willson Contreras), there’s plenty of reason to be hopeful for more development.
Davis will return to Iowa for now, until a third catcher is needed. Nice to have him in the back pocket.
