Gotta Heap Some Comeback Praise Onto Bryzzo, Too, and Other Bullets

The Little Boy has leveled up in Taekwondo that he gets to spar, which means he wears sparring equipment. I was still in Chicago awaiting a flight yesterday when The Wife had to get him geared up for his first sparring session, and I got a stray FaceTime call … of The Wife presenting a jock strap. She had questions.

Still riding the high of the Javy Baez walk-off last night, but also keeping in mind how gingerly he moved around after slapping that ball into right field. As for whether Javy Baez will play today, Joe Maddon told ESPN that he was, “probably going to write out two lineups and see where we’re at when he shows up.” I am tentatively expecting another day off(ish).

Embedded within – and not to be lost in – that praise for Baez, how about Kris Bryant’s baserunning last night? He pulled an El Mago to score the team’s first run, and then did a magnificent job to score the game-tying run by busting it down the line and keeping his foot down on the slide at home:

Also not to be lost in the Javy praise, Anthony Rizzo’s two-strike double, after Bryant’s walk, was fantastic. Juan Nicasio was working him down with sliders and getting foul balls, and then tried to bust him up and in with a fastball. Nope. Not happening. A ripped double into the right field corner.

Speaking of Rizzo, any chance you saw the TMZ report about him, Jon Lester, Kyle Schwarber, and Albert Almora being out late into the wee hours on Saturday night in Washington? If you didn’t see it, you didn’t miss much, because they basically went out to a bar, didn’t get into any trouble, and then got late-night McDonald’s. Just kind of living life. And for that, Rizzo had some perfect responses when asked about it:

Rea, now 28, is certainly having a lot of success: in the offense-bloated PCL, he’s posted a 2.91 ERA so far, fifth best in the league. Heck, there are only 10 pitchers with an ERA under 4.25!
