Chicago Cubs

Nice comeback, though, right? That did not look like it was going to be a game after, say, the 4th inning or so, but the Cubs wound up with the tying run on second base with one out in the 9th, so that’s a comeback. It’s just that, well, it fizzled as Addison Russell struck out and Victor Caratini popped out.

The Cubs almost tied it the inning before, when Javy Baez sent one out to left, but it was caught near the warning track. You just kinda expect Javy to do it at this point, so off the bat, sigh, I thought he’d done it.

As for all that preceded the exciting final few innings, Jon Lester did not have it today from the word go, which is not heartening to see (but also not necessarily worrying), and the defense sure didn’t help him. Although they registered just one error on the day, there were a number of misplays and mis-throws that were huge mistakes, even if you can’t count them as errors. Without those mistakes, the Cubs win this one, because the bats did plenty.

That end, you always like it when the Cubs claw their way back into a game they trail 7-0, but I’m just disappointed by the mistakes that got them there, and kept them there.
