The Cubs are kicking off the Crosstown whateverit’scalled later tonight, and they’ll face the righty Ivan Nova in Game 1. Here’s how the Cubs will line up.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Javy Baez, SS
- Jason Heyward, CF
- Victor Caratini, C
- Carlos Gonzalez, RF
- Cole Hamels, P
- Daniel Descalso, 2B
The Cubs lineup features ONLY two right-handed bats tonight (Javy Baez and Kris Bryant), and for fairly obvious reasons. Although Nova has struggled a bit against everybody this season, he’s been especially bad against lefties all year:
Versus Lefties: .349/.386/.570 (.400 wOBA)
Versus Righties: .205/.363/.482 (.358 wOBA)
Obviously, he’s still a big league pitcher, but the Cubs offense NEEDS to take advantage of this juicy matchup.
So with a bench of David Bote, Addison Russell, Willson Contreras, and Albert Almora Jr., the Cubs outfield is all lefties – Schwarber, Heyward, Gonzalez – and Daniel Descalso graces the infield for an increasingly rare start at second base. He doesn’t have much of a history with Nova (1-3 lifetime), but if there was any night to get the lefties in there, it’s tonight.
With that said (and while I still like the move) Victor Caratini is 0-2 lifetime against Nova, while Willson Contreras is 5-11 with a double. Clearly, the Cubs starting catcher has seen him well, but, as always, he needs rest too and this was a good time for it.
Other notable performances against Nova include Carlos Gonzalez (6-12, 2B, 3BBs), Anthony Rizzo (7-15, 2B, BB), and Javy Baez (4-19, 2HRs, 7Ks). We’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (7:05 CT) – and be sure to join Luis and I after the game for another episode of Outside the Ivy on NBC Sports Chicago!
