The Braves did some fussing and some fightin’, but it didn’t do them a lotta good in the final accounting.
The Cubs worked an exceptional opposite field approach during a five-run fifth inning, which wound up being plenty for the win. The Cubs bookended their scoring on the night with an early Willson Contreras solo shot and a late Jason Heyward solo shot.
Earlier in the game there were some shenanigans surrounding Contreras’s homer. Best I can figure, Contreras and Braves catcher Tyler Flowers exchanged – something – before Contreras’s homer. Then Willson gave Flowers a look after he hit the ball, Flowers said something when Willson arrived at the plate, Willson said a lot more, and then the benches cleared for further conversation.
Jon Lester had his good command working tonight through six innings where he did not allow an earned run. Seven strikeouts. No walks. Just five hits. Dude had it.
