Daniel Descalso injured his ankle on May 4, or just about three months ago.
Today, he’s headed to the Injured List.
To be sure, it’s possible he suffered another ankle injury, walking through the clubhouse perhaps, but it’s more likely that he injured it back then, it wasn’t quite serious enough to go on the IL, he tried to play through it, things went sideways, and then he was in such a funk that he couldn’t work out of it with limited playing time. Why he wasn’t placed on the IL literal months ago is a question you’d have to as the Cubs. They seemed content to play with a 24-man roster for far too long.
Anyway, the Cubs get to keep Descalso for the future, but the spot on the roster is opened up for them to maneuver guys around, and/or finally make a key bench addition in trade. Praise baseball jeebus.
Today, Descalso to the IL opens up a spot for newly-added lefty, Derek Holland. He’s available today.
