Although I think it’s fair to question the way the bullpen was deployed again last night – specifically, the heavy taxing of Steve Cishek instead of just letting Rowan Wick start that 8th inning (and then going to Tyler Chatwood instead of Wick) – there can be no questioning of when Jon Lester was pulled.
Joe Maddon pulled Lester after the 7th inning, at 94 pitches, because Lester asked him to.
Lester: “Not too many times I go up to Joe or Tommy…but tonight was one of them. I was gassed. The sixth and seventh inning got to me.”
“Today was my last day of Z-pack.”

More Lester on if being sick earlier this week impacted him today: Yeah, today was my last day of Z-Pak. I just think I had to grind through it. Every pitch mattered. Had to be really into it, had to make sure we didn’t miss. That takes a toll on you.

Jon Lester more or less never says he is done, so yeah, he was done. Pretty incredible performance for Lester, coming off his bout of bronchitis: 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 5 K.
It’s a shame the bullpen couldn’t make it stand up.
