A modest update on the FIRST PLACE CARDINALS’ Trade Deadline plans and expectations.
Derrick Goold lays it out at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and among the highlights:
The Cardinals want to add a starting pitcher like Robbie Ray or Mike Minor. Prices, so far, have been too high.
They’d also like to add another lefty reliever.
Jedd Gyorko was set to start a rehab assignment, but the Cardinals basically told him to wait, because they’re trying to trade him. The 30-year-old infielder has been wrecked this year by injuries, but was a solidly above-average hitter the last three years with the Cardinals. He’s making $8 million this year from the Cardinals, and comes with a $13 million team option for next year ($1 million buyout).
The Cardinals sound modestly optimistic that the market will open up later today.
With a one-game lead in the woeful Central, the Cardinals have as much incentive as the Brewers and Cubs to make useful additions before today’s 3pm CT Trade Deadline.
