Deadline Day Notes: Giants Finally Selling, Cubs Hypo for Merrifield, Brewers and Leake, More

Chicago Cubs

OK, finally, with less than five hours to go before the Trade Deadline, stuff is starting to percolate …

  • With everyone else slow-playing the pitching market, the Giants are finally deciding to do what they SHOULD do, and go in with both feet:

  • That means Madison Bumgarner as the top starting rental, Will Smith as the top bullpen rental, and other pieces like Tony Watson and Drew Pomeranz.
  • If this – the second tweet video – were actually on the table, I think the Cubs would have to do it (I don’t think the Royals would do it, even if they loved Happ):

  • That deal would dramatically improve the Cubs for the final two months, and may not actually hurt them much in the years thereafter, depending on how Merrifield ages.
  • This would make sense for the Brewers, who could probably get Leake for virtually no prospect cost (they have a weak system now), and pay Leake very little (because he likely stinks):

  • Posturing, I reckon, as the Yankees very much want to pick up a starter:

  • No one is reasonably expecting Noah Syndergaard to be dealt at this point:
