My grandpa used to tell me stories about when the Cubs won a series on the road. Ol’ gramps sure could spin a yarn.
Jon Lester was not nearly as bad as his line looks, but it didn’t matter in the final accounting, because the one early run he gave up was going to be enough to lose this one.
That is to say, the offense was not able to do anything at all with Jack Flaherty, who no-hit them into the 6th inning (it was new outfielder Nick Castellanos who broke it up with the only hit the Cubs would get on the night).
Derek Holland gave up the final blow in this one, a three-run homer to switch-hitter Matt Wieters (in other words … Holland was called upon to get out a righty in a messy spot … which everyone who pays even remote attention could tell you was a mistake … ). The game was *probably* already over at that point, but oh baby was it over after that.
