Chicago Cubs

The Cubs’ inconsistency on the road is … ahhhh … so consistent.

Jose Quintana was incredibly sharp tonight, with his stuff looking as good as it has looked with the Cubs. To lose a game when your starter does that is just so discouraging.

But so it is for the Cubs’ offense these days. They are a talented group, but when they get locked up, it just seems like they have trouble scrapping their way into a few runs. Probably just me being anecdotally frustrated for the night – I’m sure most teams’ fans feel the same way – but it sucks.

Sure, strictly speaking, it was the bullpen that gave this one up, and a bullpen allowing a couple late runs ain’t great, even in the current environment. The offense scoring just two runs on a night they got dominant starting pitching, however, felt worse tonight. (Separately: Maybe the call against Tony Kemp in the 9th wouldn’t have changed things, but you never know. And it was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen.)

It’s pretty rare you see this kind of K/BB disparity where the losing team dominated, but alas. Couldn’t come through.
