You can hold out hope for Anthony Rizzo’s back being only a day or two situation.
The #Cubs today placed LHP Derek Holland on the 10-day IL (retroactive to 8/24) with a left wrist contusion and recalled INF David Bote from @IowaCubs. pic.twitter.com/a55ruNTFt6

The Cubs now have a more reasonable roster balance, with four on the bench and eight in the bullpen. Though, presumably, Rizzo is out today, so it’ll still be a three-man bench for the finale against the Nationals.
Meanwhile, Holland’s injury will keep him out at least until rosters expand to the full 40-man in September, so there really isn’t anything to consider as to when he returns. When he feels fine, if it’s been 10 days, he’ll be back, and the Cubs’ bullpen will probably be enormous by that point.
As for Bote, we discussed him last night, but the gist is that he barely got any time at Iowa, and returns to the big leagues without having used up an option year. He has quietly hit very well in a reserve role over the past few months (remember, he broke his toe in that first series of the year (and played through it (because using the IL for position players is not something the Cubs do (apparently)))). What has flagged this year is his defense at third and second, so I’m not sure what can be done about that in the season.
Bote is a bench guy at this point, but a good one overall. Nice to have him back.
