With both the Cardinals and Brewers off yesterday, the Cubs’ sweep over the Mets got them a half-game of movement in the NL Central standings.
It has been such a whipsaw in the standings lately, with the Cubs now 1.5 games back, which is where they were after the second loss in the Nationals series, before dipping all the way to 3.0 games back … which all happened just a few days after the Cubs had a lead in the division (to say nothing of the multi-game lead they had earlier this month).
Until the Cardinals get off their crazy hot streak – they’ve lost just 4 times in their last 19 games – the Cubs are going to have to just hang around as best they can.
That’ll mean a series win this weekend over the Brewers, who are going to come to Wrigley Field rested (they were off yesterday, while the Cubs were playing a night game and then traveling, because the schedule totally makes sense), and desperate. The Brewers are not only 4.0 games back of the Cubs there in the Central, but also for the second Wild Card spot. Hopefully the Cubs have started to feel their own underdog vibe.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, kick off a four-game set in three days against the Reds in St. Louis.
