So here’s an interesting roster move, that I hope is not suggestive of more terror ahead.
The Cubs just called up Adbert Alzolay from Iowa, which was definitely expected to happen this month, but perhaps not until Iowa’s playoff run was complete. Moreover, Alzolay was scheduled to start for Iowa today. And obviously now he won’t be.
Does that mean the Cubs simply decided they wanted another arm for the bullpen after heavy usage yesterday? Or does it simply mean, with Tyler Chatwood down, the Cubs specifically wanted another long arm? Or – and this one is the scary one – does it mean the Cubs fear they will need a fill-in starter in the next few days? We know that they expect, for example, Yu Darvish to make his next start, though Chatwood could have taken that one even if Darvish doesn’t. So why bring up Alzolay today unless you fear something else?
… unless, again, it’s simply a matter of wanting another long arm in the bullpen today. For now, that’s definitely the most logical explanation, so I’m gonna stick with that.
