That’s a sweep! It’s just a two-gamer, and it’s against a bad team, but it’s a sweep just the same!
The offense was clicking in this one, and it was good to see Ben Zobrist back in there atop the order, working competitive at bats. Willson Contreras homered in his first at bat back, Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber stayed scorching hot, and the Cubs looked good out there.
Jon Lester struggled in the first inning, loading the bases and needing 29 pitches to get out of the frame. He had a few more moments of danger after that, but he was far more efficient, and wound up going six scoreless. BDJ.
There was a weird Mariners run in the 8th that shouldn’t have counted (Kyle Schwarber lasered one to second base to get a runner for the third out, just before Dee Gordon stepped on home plate, but there was a (bad) review quirk that kept the run on the board). We’ll talk about it in the Bullets I suppose, since it didn’t wind up mattering. Thank goodness.
A whole lot of returns for the Cubs tonight …
