It’s official: Danny Hultzen, the 2011 2nd overall pick, is now up with the Chicago Cubs. Nobody thought he’d ever get here after a wave of injuries destroyed his arm, but here he is. Good on him. Hope to see him in a game soon.
To make room for Hultzen on the 40-man roster, catcher Taylor Davis was designated for assignment. With the Cubs already having a third catcher in tow in the form of Jonathan Lucroy, Davis was not going to be up with the big team barring a crippling series of injuries.
As it stands, Davis will be waived, and may accept an outright to Iowa so that he can be available just in case of that crippling series of injuries. After that, he’ll be a minor league free agent, and he can decide if he wants to stick in the Cubs’ organization as a depth catcher. In that role, he’s been pretty solid. I hope he sticks around for next year.
