I’m going to skip the part where I’m deeply angry this wasn’t determined much sooner, and I’ll instead hope that his treatment would have been the same regardless.
Anyway, the horrible news:
Hairline fracture in left thumb for Javy Baez, MRI revealed. He will see Cubs hand specialist Monday to determine timeline.

We can all do as much speculating as we’d like, but no one is going to know anything firm until after Monday. It’s not impossible to imagine a very, very slight fracture in the very perfect place being something Baez could come back from in a couple weeks, but you hope for such things right now at your own peril.
It is not inconceivable that Baez’s season is now over, in which case Addison Russell is the everyday starter at shortstop, and David Bote is the primary backup. These things are quite alarming, to say nothing of the lost offensive and defensive impact from Baez.
Here’s hoping for a miracle.
