Infield hit. Walk. Walk. Walk.
That’s how the Cubs lost tonight, after battling back multiple times and getting huge performances out of several key players. What a frustrating night. Yeesh.
Offensively, Jason Heyward had himself a good game tonight, with his 20th and 21st homers of the season, plus two walks. Kris Bryant joined him with two home runs of his own (plus a walk), which brought the Cubs within a run both times. They had good games.
Jose Quintana did not have a good game, as his final line will clearly demonstrate (3.0 IP, 7H, 6R, 4ER, 0BB, 1K) … though, it wasn’t entirely his fault. Ben Zobrist threw a would-be inning-ending double-play ball into left field in the bottom of the second inning, which allowed three runs to score, and Quintana never fully rebounded from there.
But you know who was awesome tonight? Tyler Chatwood. Pitching in relief of Quintana, Chatwood tossed 3.0 innings of relief, featuring 4 strikeouts and nothing else. His ERA is down to 3.86.
Tough loss … and the Cubs elimination number ticks down to 15.
