MAXIMUM CHAOS: Ever Wonder What Happens If Five Teams Tie for Wild Card Spot Two? No One Know!

Chicago Cubs

Priority one, with a bullet: win the NL Central. Even in service of madness, there is no outcome to the regular season better than that for the Cubs.

Now, you’d *think* that priority two would be the Cubs somehow finding a way to not only hang onto a Wild Card spot, but to slide up into the top spot by passing the Nationals. But I’m no longer so sure that’s how to maximize our fun as fans.

Make no mistake: a Wild Card Game at Wrigley Field sounds fun, and if it comes to that, cool, groovy, I’m no board.

But today I was reminded of the utter chaos that can ensue of multiple teams tie for the Wild Card spot(s), and/or tie atop the division with other non-division Wild Card teams. There’s a write-up at MLB.com worth checking out, but here are a few MAX CHAOS possibilities that I would absolutely love to see happen, because LET’S GET CRAZY:

* * *

So, basically, the best version there for max chaos is a five-team tie between the Cubs, Brewers, Mets, Phillies, and Diamondbacks for the second Wild Card spot. It’s a scenario so insane that MLB hasn’t even created a rule for it, and they’d have to figure it out on the fly in the final week of the season. Come on. That sounds awesome. Let’s get nuts.

(Or just win the division outright, Cubs, and let the other teams tie down there in some crazy way. That’d be fun, too.)
