Well, sir, that game was considerably more drunk than I am right now.
But in fairness, I’m writing this Enhanced Box Score a good six hours after this game ended, which is to say I celebrated the win with a gusto appropriate for mid-September.
Jon Lester did the thing that he has become so fondly attached to, giving up a buttload of first inning runs (not all his fault) and then chilling out for the next several innings. The Cubs had multiple enormous innings so it was all good in any case.
One of those enormous innings, the fifth, did not begin until Kris Bryant had grounded out to end the frame … and that was overturned into an infield single … and then the Cubs scored seven runs in the inning. That’s crazy. And great.
Also, it’s weird to say in a blowout game, and it might not mean anything at all, but Brad Wieck and Alec Mills looked mighty impressive.
Also, the bats. So much offense. More on that later.
