Chicago Cubs Lineup: Willson Contreras Is Your Starting First Baseman Tonight

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have won five games in a row (at exactly the right time), but they’re running into a tough challenge tonight with Sonny Gray on the mound. Here’s the Cubs Javy Baez-less, Anthony Rizzo-less lineup against the Reds for Game 2.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  2. Nicholas Castellanos, RF
  3. Kris Bryant, 3B
  4. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  5. Willson Contreras, 1B
  6. Victor Caratini, C
  7. Jason Heyward, CF
  8. Nico Hoerner, SS
  9. Yu Darvish, P

With Yu Darvish on the mound, it’s Victor Caratini behind the plate tonight (as it has been for most of the season). But just because Caratini is catching doesn’t mean Willson Contreras isn’t getting into this game – we’re way too deep into this extremely tight division/WC race for that.

With Rizzo still on the mend, Contreras slides over to first base, which keeps his great bat in the lineup and helps mitigate against the lack of Baez/Rizzo. Beyond that, there aren’t really many surprises.

Zobrist and Hoerner are your double-play combo up the middle, though they’re hitting at opposite-ends of the lineup, and the red-hot Kris Bryant rounds out the infield at third, batting third.

Kyle Schwarber continues his hunt for 40 bombs out in left, and he’s joined by Jason Heyward and Nicholas Castellanos. Sonny Gray has been almost exactly split-neutral this season (which is also to say … really good), so the Cubs have their work cut out for them. As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (7:05 CT).
