REPORT: David Ross Expected to Be Named New Cubs Manager (UPDATES: External Confirmation)

Chicago Cubs

There it is, the first leaked report that really throws it down and names the Cubs’ next manager.

David Kaplan says it’s happening with old friend David Ross:

With word last night that Ross had received a second interview after the Cubs spoke to Joe Espada a second time, it kinda seemed like it was possible the negotiations on a contract might have begun, so this does square.

We’ll have much more when it becomes a little more official, including a deeper dive on why this could be the right fit for the Cubs at this time. We’ll also update this post with anything else that trickles out this morning.

UPDATE I (Michael): It sure seems like Kaplan is confident about this, mentioning that the other candidates have already been informed they are out:

I’m also listening to Kaplan on the radio right now, who’s saying the same: “David Ross is your new manager.” Kaplan (per Jesse Rogers) suggests that the Cubs will announce this decision by tomorrow (though concedes that it could be today). Not that it matters that much, but if the Cubs were planning to announce/”introduce” tomorrow, I’d expect them to stick to that. That said, maybe we can hope for some verbal confirmation today.

UPDATE II: Others jumping in on the confirmation …
