The Chicago Cubs’ first coaching staff under David Ross is coming more into view, after the additions of Andy Green (bench coach), Chris Young (bullpen coach), and now the retention of Will Venable.
Theo Epstein confirms Will Venable will remain on the Cubs coaching staff under new manager David Ross. The Cubs now have two open spots for a base coach and a quality assurance coach.

Venable was among the Cubs’ internal managerial interviews, and also interviewed with the Giants for their yet-unfilled opening (sounds like it is gonna go to Joe Espada, who was the Cubs’ other finalist (also, the Giants poached Scott Harris … eyes on your own paper, jerks)). He was not expected to land a managerial gig just yet, but he’s very much viewed as a potential future manager, with great communication skills, some front office experience, and obviously coaching experience.
Good to be keeping him in the fold.
As Patrick Mooney says, the Cubs are still looking for a third base coach to replace Brian Butterfield, and a quality assurance coach to replace Chris Denorfia.
