Obviously the biggest loss of Yu Darvish’s injured first year with the Chicago Cubs (2018) was missing out on another division title (and what may have been his most productive year under contract, based on age). But after watching him dominate on the field in the second half of 2019 and open up a bit more to the fans in Chicago along the way, I’m starting to think that we missed out on just as much off-the-field than on it.
That is to say: Yu Darvish is freakin’ awesome and fun.
In a couple of tweets, Yu Darvish shared his most watched YouTube video ever: him throwing left-handed to a friend … who’s got more courage than I do and absolutely no shot at doing much of anything:
The Twitter translations are always rough, but Darvish seems to say that he plays this backyard (“garden”) game 3-4 times a week, which is hilarious. He also thinks his performance is unsightly, which is also ridiculous because he’s a 1000x better pitcher left-handed than any of us would ever be with our dominant arm.
Darvish also thinks the door deserves some credit for taking a beating over and over.
So if you get a second, do what he says and go drop a “cheering comment.” He deserves it.
