Theo Epstein Speaks: Cubs Deals Not Close, Confidence on Bryant Grievance, Promising Trade Leads, More

The Chicago Cubs’ man in charge took to the media this evening in San Diego for the first day of the Winter Meetings. Make sure you’re following the beat reporters on Twitter to keep up with the latest.

Among Epstein’s comments …

  • In years past, when Epstein or Jed Hoyer have suggested or even hinted at something being close to being completed, it was basically just about to break or be announced. So the fact that Epstein tonight says nothing is close is one of those relative things – it doesn’t mean nothing is happening at the meetings. It just means, I suspect, that nothing official is going to be announced tonight or anything like that.
  • Epstein expressed pretty significant confidence that the Kris Bryant grievance is going to result in the Cubs retaining two years of control over their star third baseman, which is not necessarily a surprise – that’s been the industry perspective for a long time now – but it’s interesting to see that he’s so comfortable saying it publicly.
  • Not that he’s happy about the timing, which we beefed about earlier today:
  • I’d imagine it’s all the more frustrating for the Cubs if they are indeed that confident in the outcome. From their perspective, it might feel like they just need the dang rubber stamp so they can move on with their offseason. As we’ve said since day one when the hearing began, Bryant’s level of control is so critical to his value and his future with the Cubs, and his superstar impact is so enormous, that not having this decision in place could easily hold up everything else the Cubs want to do this offseason. Maybe, in the end, it won’t have been a problem – maybe trade partners will wait, maybe free agents will wait, maybe most of the movement already has been on guys the Cubs weren’t going to be involved on anyway, etc. – but I reckon it’s stressful as hell.
  • And that’s all to say nothing of extension talks, if there are any to be had with Bryant before a trade is further explored. Also: future budgeting as it impacts free agency. It isn’t just about whether you can extend Bryant or trade Bryant, and how that impacts payroll, it’s also literally just about knowing what the payroll and roster could look like in 2021 if Bryant is still around! I’m getting worked up again.
  • One last thing on that front: *if* the Cubs are so confident in the outcome that they are proceeding as if they know they outcome (i.e., it’s gonna be status quo two years for Bryant), and *if* they are confident the decision is coming in no more than two weeks, then I think the idea that they could successfully proceed with conditional trade talks (or extension talks, if you want to be a hopeful fan) becomes a lot more plausible.
  • Epstein has more or less made this same point before when it comes to trades:
  • It isn’t trades for trades’ sake, and it isn’t *quite* change for change’s sake, but it’s kinda close to that second one. The Cubs have great players. Anyone they trade away is probably going to be a great player. But more lineup diversity is needed, impact starting pitching is necessary, and different layers of team control are necessary. Thus, “benefit from some change.”
  • And the trades could be coming:
  • The obligatory payroll question, and the obligatory fancy non-answer from Epstein:
  • The one interesting bit that he slipped in there? The Cubs don’t discuss payroll before the offseason plays out, but “this year particularly I think there are a lot of strategic reasons – what’s going on out in the marketplace – to play our cards close to the vest.” I could speculate on a few different reasons THIS year and THIS marketplace have particularities: it could be the depth in the middle tiers of free agency, it could be the rapid escalation for price tags at the top of the market, or it could simply be because the Cubs do want to make a lot of trades and they don’t want trade partners being able to use the financial side of things as leverage.
  • For now, all we know for sure is that Epstein is very aware of the financial narrative out there, and he is not inclined to confirm or deny, letting their actions speak for it when the offseason is over. (Which is what they pretty much always do.)
