Given the series state of affairs in the country and around the world, I expect it’s difficult for teams to know the right tone to strike when trying to connect with their fans right now in the absence of sport.
On the one hand, you can’t ignore the bigger, more serious picture. On the other hand, you want to relate to your fans in the primary way you know: through fun and excitement. As a sports-adjacent site, I’m still working on the tone, myself.
But if you’re going to go serious for a moment, I’m not sure you could pull it off much better than the Cubs did this weekend with their tribute to old-time video. It was an appropriate, current-to-the-moment way to tug on our sense of nostalgia and love for the sport of baseball, while still evoking some measure of fun.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I hope you enjoy. I certainly did, even as it made me emotional in the process.
