COVID-19 and Baseball Update: Under Way in Asia, a Plan for Fans in South Korea, the Ecosystem of Baseball

It’s still the case that nobody knows nothin’ about the return of baseball in the States, but there are several notable items to get to related to baseball and COVID-19 pandemic.

  • In South Korea, baseball is still on track to begin with preseason games in just over one week:
  • Although South Korea was hit harder earlier than many other countries, its extreme testing and tracking measures put it in a fundamentally different position than virtually any other country dealing with COVID-19 (notably, their first cases and those in the United States started at the same time). Whether that means they’ll be able to pull off baseball, as planned, so many months before it will even be plausible in the United States remains to be seen, but I sure hope they can do it. It would just feel good to know that some countries out there are getting baseball back.
  • As for fans, obviously the KBO plans to start their season without them in attendance. But eventually, they could slowly incorporate fans – 10% capacity, then 20% capacity, etc. I’ve been wondering whether that would be possible in MLB much later this year, and if so, how in the world you would handle the distribution of those tickets. You’ve got season ticket holders to consider, market forces to consider, and then the economics of whether it is worth operating a full MLB ballpark for only 10% of the gate receipts.
  • (I think, by the way, it’s worth reading that Newsday piece for a general sense of what things are like in South Korea right now, where they are starting to have a post-outbreak “normal” life – it means mandatory masks for everyone, temperature checks for everyone entering establishments, and testing available 24/7 to anyone who needs or even merely wants it. We are a far cry off from that.)
  • When the KBO gets going, it could be your one option for televised baseball:
  • If that happens, I’m totally picking a KBO team to be “my” team. Tentatively thinking the KT Wiz, because they are the Wiz, and nobody beats them.
  • Meanwhile, there is baseball happening Taiwan, as well, and they want international fans to give them a look (this is the country’s president):
  • Notably, Taiwan is where they are doing this in some places:
  • I wonder if it will help MLB’s planning process to be able to observe how things are going in Taiwan and South Korea (and possibly Japan within a month or two) as they consider best practices.
  • Reiterating the nobody-knows-nothin’ thing:
  • The Braves are already committing to keeping their employees on board and fully compensated through May, which is good, but also could suggest that if there isn’t a viable plan in place to launch baseball at some point this year, the layoffs may come en masse in June:
  • To that end, I want to reiterate a point that I have tried to make a few times, but I feel like I don’t see it being made anywhere else … so I’m saying it again: “sports” are not simply the action on the field, their upside tied only to the distraction and entertainment they provide to fans. They are substantial businesses that employ thousands and thousands of “regular folks,” and operate in an ecosystem where thousands and thousands of more “regular folks” have their real lives impacted. If baseball were cancelled entirely this year, countless people would be seriously – and perhaps permanently – damaged. It isn’t just the many employees of baseball teams. Think about all the bars and restaurants that will go under in Wrigleyville. All the employees at the regional TV networks that will be laid off. The hotel and service industry staffs. The apparel companies. The food suppliers. The media. All have regular employees who would be absolutely crushed by a total shutdown. So when you see people keeping things optimistic about playing, and talking about the importance, it isn’t just about being a fan. The industry is important.
