When we think about Yu Darvish, obviously we think about the Cubs pitcher (and the dude who was going to ball-the-eff-out this year, and hopefully still will get a chance to).
But you may also think about Darvish’s huge social media presence, which he’s cultivated quite wisely by being open, candid, funny, interesting, and consistent. For those who don’t know, I am not talking solely about his Twitter presence – he’s also a YouTube star, with nearly half a million subscribers.
His latest video is on “Yutrition,” and although it is in Japanese, I can only assume it is about how the Milwaukee Brewers are all cowards, a hot dog is a sandwich, and the real secret to baseball success is the friends we made along the way:
In all seriousness, what matters here is that Darvish has leveraged his considerable social media stardom into some real world good. Not that you would expect any different from him.
Dylan Hernandez offering up the translation on an article out of Japan, and Darvish sharing another of his own:
Yu Darvish earned more than $43k in November from his popular YouTube channel. He donated half of that sum to a cancer reasearch center and the other half to a nonprofit organization that supports single-mother households. https://t.co/dBQUUSn54e— Dylan Hernandez (@dylanohernandez) April 25, 2020

Basically, Darvish got his YouTube earnings from November and decided to just send them all out to good causes. A rough Google translation also indicates that he plans to contribute more to coronavirus-related causes when it’s clear where those contributions would do the most good.
In conclusion: Yu Good, YuTube.
